Three-Letter Words for WyldTyle

Nearly nine hundred three-letter words are playable in WyldTyle. Nobody learns them all, and nobody needs to. This page groups them by first letter so you can scan the ones that start with whatever you have already placed, and it picks out the patterns that make the three-letter slot one of the easiest on the board to finish.

How to read this list

Each group below is headed by its first letter, and each word carries its point value. When you have a letter locked into the first position of your three-letter word, jump to that group and skim for the vowels you are likely to roll. E is the most common vowel on the dice, followed by A, I, and O, so words built around those are the ones the game will most often hand you.

The small number after each word is its WyldTyle score with no wild tiles. Letter values are on the scoring guide.

Strategy for the three-letter slot

The three-letter word averages just over one vowel, and the overwhelming majority follow a consonant-vowel-consonant shape: CAT, HEN, TOP. That shape is your friend. If you place a consonant in position one and another in position three, you need any single vowel to arrive in the remaining 17 turns, and the dice roll a vowel on every consonant-vowel or two-vowel call. Barring a truly perverse run, the slot will finish itself.

• Save it for spare consonants. Rare consonants like F, G, W, and Y are hard to fit into long words. The three-letter slot absorbs them cheaply: FEW, GYM, WHY, and YEW are all here.
• Don't spend a wild here. With so many valid combinations, a wild tile in a three-letter word is nearly always wasted. Keep wilds for the six- and seven-letter slots where the pattern is constrained. The wild tiles guide covers this in detail.
• Vowel-free options exist. BRR, CRY, DRY, FLY, GYM, HMM, NTH, SHH, SKY, THY, TRY, and WHY need no A, E, I, O, or U at all. They matter when the dice have been stingy with vowels. The vowel-free list has the rest.

The highest scorers

The ceiling at three letters is 12 points, shared by VAV and YUK. A cluster of words scores 11: BUB, BUY, GUV, IVY, KAB, KAY, KIP, KOB, and KOP among them. These all lean on the four- and five-point letters B, K, P, V, and Y, so they are not words you plan for. They are words you notice when a K and a Y happen to be sitting in your hand at the same time.

A typical three-letter word scores 6 or 7. Given that any valid word here contributes to the Wyld Pyle bonus, the difference between a 6-point finish and an 11-point one is far less important than the difference between finished and unfinished.
